Tour Description

This accessible Progreso shore excursion combines the best of Mayan culture with some fun in the state capital town. Enjoy a scenic drive through the landscape of Yucatan, explore the ancient Mayan ruins of Dzibilchaltun and experience the incredible town of Merida for lunch and souvenir shopping.

Start your day by meeting your friendly guide/driver by the cruise dock head out on a beautiful, scenic ride along the lush Yucatan landscape. Your first stop of the day will be the spectacular site if the Dzibilchaltun Mayan Ruins. This is one of the most significant ceremonial centers of the Mayan world! Escorted by your tour guide, you will explore this breathtaking archaeological site firsthand, using accessible routes throughout. Among other things, you will see the most famous structure among the ruins, the Temple of the Seven Dolls. It was named so because of seven small effigies found at the site when the temple was discovered by archaeologists in the 1050s under the ruins of a later temple pyramid. You will also see the Cenote Xlakah, which is located around the center of the city’s ruins. Archaeological finds of the cenote by divers indicate that it was the center of a religious cult. Many incredible wooden objects, carved bones
and other objects have been found here, revealing valuable information about the ancient Mayans who once lived near the cenote. The ruin site also includes an accessible visitor center, restrooms and gift shops as well as a museum housing Mayan artifacts.

After your visit here, you will head to the town of Merida which is the vibrant capital of the Mexican state of Yucatan. This wonderful town has rich Mayan and colonial heritage. Enjoy a short panoramic drive through the city seeing the glorious, fortress-like Merida Cathedral, the 16 th century mansion Casa de Montejo and the focal point Plaza de la Independencia, before stopping for lunch at an accessible traditional restaurant (cost not included). The final part of your tour will be spent enjoying some browsing and souvenir shopping at the main square of the city Plaza Grande.
